Within Zaha Hadid’s first-realized U.S. museum, mixed media artist/trained architect Lauren Henkin will present Props: an exhibition of eight site-responsive sculptures that use unconventional materials and unexpected install locations as tools to highlight the intuition (or lack thereof) behind different ways of how and when we perceive an object as “art.”

The works, many of which are composed of industrial building supplies, are diversely oriented throughout the building and respond site-specifically to the architecture. Props occupies a cumulative 3,300 cubic feet of space that’s never before been used to display artwork; in addition to prominent install sites like Hadid’s famed “Urban Carpet,” locations include vestibules, benches – even corners of bathrooms.

Said curator Steven Matijcio: “Lauren’s uncanny animation of spaces that are habitually overlooked within the museum speaks to a larger, more holistic consideration of an iconic structure that can seem overdetermined, and even overbearing. What happens when the work of a ‘starchitect’ is interrupted by peculiar agents living in spaces previously unauthorized?”
